When you think of Cluj-Napoca, you might first picture vibrant city streets, lively cafés, and the charm of a historic town full of energy. But tucked away just a few minutes from the city center, there’s a green oasis where time seems to slow down – the “Alexandru Borza” Botanical Garden.
This wonderful place is not only a haven for nature lovers but also a perfect spot for anyone looking to relax, recharge, and enjoy the beauty of every season. We recently visited during the peak of tulip season, and it reminded us why the Botanical Garden is one of the most beloved places in Cluj.
A garden with a rich story
The story of Cluj-Napoca’s Botanical Garden begins much earlier than you might expect. The city’s first academic botanical garden – the forerunner of today’s garden – is connected to the founding of the Society of the Transylvanian Museum (1859) and the establishment of Franz Josef University (1872). Organized by Professor August Kanitz on land donated by Count Mikó (in the area now occupied by the park on 5-7 Clinicilor Street), this early garden laid the foundations for what would later become one of the most important green spaces in Romania.
After 1900, Professor Aladár Richter succeeded in acquiring a 9-hectare plot of gardens and orchards on the southern edge of the city – the site where the Botanical Garden stands today.

With the establishment of the University of Upper Dacia in 1919, Professor Alexandru Borza was entrusted with the mission of reorganizing and expanding the garden, now placed under the authority of the university (today Babeș-Bolyai University). He enlarged its surface to 14 hectares and designed its layout based on the latest scientific concepts of the time. Plant phylogeny and phytogeography were skillfully interwoven with the principles of ecology, artistic refinement, and the educational purpose of introducing the public to the world of plants – creating the unique and harmonious space that we can still enjoy today.

The garden is home to more than 10,000 plant species from every corner of the globe. It serves multiple roles — a place for scientific study, education, conservation, and, perhaps most beautifully, a quiet space where anyone can reconnect with nature.
Whether you’re passionate about botany or just want to spend a few peaceful hours surrounded by greenery, the garden welcomes everyone.
What you’ll find when you visit
The Botanical Garden is divided into several themed sections, each offering a different experience:
- The Decorative Sector: This area showcases colorful flower beds, seasonal blooms, and the ever-popular tulip displays in spring. It’s one of the most photographed parts of the garden — and with good reason!
- The Japanese Garden: With its traditional red bridge, flowing water features, and carefully arranged plants, this space feels like a small corner of Kyoto brought to Cluj. It’s perfect for quiet reflection or beautiful photos.
- The Roman Garden: Here, you’ll find Roman columns and archaeological elements surrounded by plants typical of ancient Roman gardens — a peaceful reminder of the region’s historical roots.
- The Greenhouses: Step inside to explore exotic plants from tropical, subtropical, aquatic, and desert environments. Giant water lilies, cacti, orchids, and lush ferns create an entirely different world.
- The Systematic Sector and the Phytogeographic Sector: These sections are more scientific but fascinating, displaying plants organized by families or geographic origin. It’s an incredible way to travel through different continents in just a few steps.

Another charming feature of the Botanical Garden is the Water Tower, located in the Systematic Sector. Originally, the tower served a practical purpose — it was used as a water reservoir for irrigating the vast gardens. Today, it has been transformed into an important observation point for visitors.
From the top of the tower, you can admire the incredible diversity of tree species that fill this part of the garden, as well as observe the elegant structures of deciduous and coniferous tree canopies from a unique perspective.
If you happen to visit in June, make sure to look out for the beautiful flowers of the tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) — from the tower, you can see them blooming directly on the branches, offering a truly special view.
Spring magic: the tulip gardens in bloom
Spring is truly one of the best times to visit. The garden bursts into a riot of color, and nothing captures the spirit of renewal quite like the rows upon rows of blooming tulips.
Walking through the tulip gardens, you’ll see every shade imaginable — bright reds, delicate pinks, sunny yellows, deep purples, and even rare bi-colored varieties. It’s a feast for the eyes and an absolute dream for photographers.

There’s something uplifting about strolling among the tulips, breathing in the fresh spring air, and feeling the warm sun on your face. It’s a simple pleasure that reminds you to slow down and savor the moment.
Tip: Visit early in the morning if you want the softest light for photography and a more peaceful atmosphere before the crowds arrive.
